Hersh, Gamola, Faris, Myers, and Leonard bring in July with a bang at Latrobe Speedway
****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE****
LATROBE, PA (July 7, 2024) The Fourth of July weekend continued on Saturday, July 6, at Latrobe Speedway with FAST-FIVE racing, including the visiting IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars from the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series and the Allegheny Sprint Tour, and fireworks.
John Over started the 20-lap K2 Engineering FASTrak Pro Late Model feature pole with Clinton Hersh in the No. 16. Over would lead the event until around the halfway mark when Hersh took the lead on the backstretch. Braeden Dillinger started in the 12th spot and worked his way to second in the closing laps. The No.14D wasn’t able to close the deal as Hersh finally turned the tables on Dillinger. The win was Hersh’s first of the season at the Westmoreland County Speedplant. Dillinger would finish second, followed by Troy Shields, Noah Brunell, and Over. Over and Hersh won the Heat races.
The IMCA RaceSaver 305 Sprint Cars of the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series and the Allegheny Sprint Tour made their first of four appearances of the season at the big-half mile. John Scarborough, in the No. 61 from Vermont, sat on the pole with Jake Gomola in the No. 4J on the outside of row one. Gamola got the jump on Scarborough going into Turn 1 and set sail from there for the 15-lap feature. With Scarborough firmly in second, the battle for the third stop was worth watching. The No. 27K of Jeremy Kornbau started in the third spot and was keeping close tabs on the No.61 when veteran racer Andy Priest in the 21N came from the eighth starting spot to take over the third spot on lap 5. Kornbau would finish fourth, and Timmy Bittner in the No. 01 finished fifth. Kornbau and Gamola won the Heat races.
Corey Faris started on the pole in the 12-lap Joe’s Body Shop and Towing Pure Stock feature and never looked back from the drop of the green flag to pick up the win. Joey Koteles finished second in the No.20, with last week’s winner, Jeremy Zufall, finishing third after starting from the sixth spot. Matt Weltz started seventh as he won the race before Zufall. John Hollis came from ninth to fourth, and John Cain finished fifth. Jeremy Zufall and Matt Weltz won the Heat races.
The Special T Metals LLC Modified Four Cylinders put on a great show for the fans after the fireworks display with their own fireworks. Chris Myers in the No. 830 started on the outside pole alongside Brian Spangler in the No. 79. Myers took the lead in Turn one and wouldn’t look back for the 12-lap feature. However, Spangler and Paul Koffler III in the No. 48 stayed close enough to the leader Myers that he couldn’t take his foot off the gas. Koffler III took second place from Spangler on lap nine, with Spangler dropping to third. Dale Grubbs finished fourth, and Brandon Myers finished fifth from the 14th spot. Matt Weltz subbed for Tifani McElhose in the No. 24. This was Chris Myers’s first-ever feature win. Spangler and Koffler III were the Heat race winners.
Ed Leonard has back-to-back wins from the seventh starting position in the Marilungo Disposal LLC Strictly Stock 4 Cylinders. Justin Connors in the No. 21 and Brian Noel in the 39 made up the front row for the 12-lap feature. Leonard was up to third on lap one before falling back to fourth on lap two. Lap eight was when Leonard made his move, taking over the top spot from Noel. Seth Nedrow finished third, and fourth went to Dan Shortman, with fifth to Dyllen Hawley in the No. 87.
The Penn Ohio Pro Stocks will return on Saturday, July 13, as part of our FAST-FIVE racing program. Then, on Saturday, July 20, it’s the race we’ve been waiting for: the Dave Kittey Memorial, featuring the ULMS Super Late Models in a $5,000-to-win feature plus bonus money.
